Descripción : This investigation reports the results of a preliminary analysis that us used as base to design a sequence of learning, with which there was tried to improve the education of the concept of function from arguments of variational character. The study was realized under the French theory of the Social Representations, which has as backbone to the practices and the social representations. The epistemological analysis shows the emergence of the notion of "variability", as an associate knowledge and few acquaintance of the concept of function, throughout the XIX Century, stage of the history characterized by the work of engineering, best denoted like procedural. Of cognitive component the conceptions of the teachers stand out on the concept, which is estimated fastened to an institutionalized definition, widely influenced by the books of text and plans of study. On his part, the students reflect the conceptions of the teachers, and show a breaking among the diverse forms of representation. The didactic dimension shows the influence of Bourbaki movement, as well as the different forms in which the authors of text books in use construct the knowledges associated about the proper concept of function. Finally we present the design and application of a sequence of learning for the construction of an alternative representation that allows the students the acquisition of the concept of function by means of the associate meanings of variable, variation and variability, as well as the creation of a link among the different manners of representation of a function, in order which they can coordinate them during the problems resolution.
