Resumen : The purpose of this study was to compare two educational approaches of prescholastic education in a rural setting. Two kindergartens were sampled, one of the federal system, one of the state system (traditional model) and a community-supported Montessori school. The sample included 20 students per school, age 5-6 years old, both male and female. The variables examined were: practical life, sensorial, language, mathematics, and cultural areas. Repeated measures ANOVA and MANOVA were performed to test for univariate and multivariate differences in scores among schools and systems, controlling for sex, throughout two semesters. Students under the Montessori system obtained significantly better results than the ones under the traditional model. Results also suggest that for these variables the Montessori model produced more marked effects on male students.
