Resumen : ABSTRACT In the Pacific Ocean, it is known that in the Gulf of Tehuantepec there is an area of high abundance of Istiophorus platypterus and there are incidental catches by the artisanal fleet. The objective in this study was to determine the current exploitation rate of sailfish Istiophorus platypterus in the Gulf of Tehuantepec by the artisanal fleet in Puerto Angel, Oaxaca. To estimate the current exploitation status of sailfish, several biological features of the species were analyzed, and the growing parameters were included in the catchat- size analysis model known as CASA. The information was analyzed from 2000 to 2008. Catch per unit effort (CPUE), eye fork length (EFL), weight and sex, were recorded. The fourth dorsal fin spine was used for growth estimations and female gonads were used for reproductive assessment. The EFL was between 55 to 240 cm and weights between 1.6 to 69.7 kg were recorded. The size structure was unimodal, and the mean size temporal variation shows a negative tendency. The CPUE did not have a clear tendency with CPUE mean of 2.5 individuals per trip. For I. platypterus we identified five stages of ovarian development, eight kinds of oocytes, and two postovulate structures. We found that the species has a broad reproductive period with peaks identified in June (mean monthly GSI = 1.6) and September (mean monthly GSI = 2.3). The estimates of the sizes frequency distribution of whole oocytes (FDWO) showed that this analysis may be used as a tool to assess maturity. The Length of maturity (LM) for this species in the Gulf of Tehuantepec is 150.2 cm EFL (IC = 140.5 - 159 cm, P ˂ 0.05). The growth rings were formed annually through September to December months as shown by the marginal increment analysis. We observed 11 age groups (1 to 11 years) with a coefficient variation (CV) = 10.8. The ages 5 and 6 were the best represented (32% and 24% respectively), followed by age group 4 (14%). The best candidate model was selected using Akaike’s information criterion. We found the growth curve for sailfish from the Gulf of Tehuantepec is based on the three-parameter model rather than the generalized Schnute model. The parameters estimated and confidence intervals were (a) mean asymptotic eye fork length 180.6 cm (IC = 176 to 186 cm, P ˂ 0.05), (b) Brody growth coefficient 0.36 (IC = 0.34 to 0.39, P ˂ 0.05), and (c) hypothetical age at length zero 0.24 (IC = 0.30 to 0.18, P ˂ 0.05). Consequently, I believe that the von Bertalanffy growth function adequately described the individual xiv mean growth for this species in the region. Outputs of the CASA showed high size selectivity, size class of 174.5 cm EFL was the most abundant in catch, and its harvest rate was almost 50%. The organism fully recruited to the fishery reached the asymptotic length. The harvest rate for all size classes was below 35%. Finally, we consider that the sailfish Istiophorus platypterus stock of Puerto Angel, Oaxaca has low risk of overfishing.
