Descripción : The scope of this research is to identify reading comprehension challenges in scholarly enunciates that students of the first semester of engineering have. After establishing as indicators of an enunciate's comprehension the correct explanation of the enunciate's content and the correct identification of the hypothesis and thesis, follows a survey that allows to measure the relevancy of the phenomenon and tracks its dependence on the mathematical content of the enunciates and their complexity. The finding is that the phenomenon is consistent, the challenges do depend on the mathematical content, but between the areas studied which are arithmetic and geometry, there is no relevant differences in their comprehension by the students. The logic complexity does have an effect in generating more challenges with enunciates with a higher number of hypothesis. An in-depth analysis has found that in order to explain the interpretation of the enunciates by the students, it is necessary to consider other factors of socio-cultural nature like the social and cultural context as well as language skills as an important element of those contexts; the school environment with its variety of areas and their own dynamics; the instructors and their formation.
