Resumen : Based on the results of 10 oceanographic surveys made during all four seasons over five years, a study of the distribution and abundance of Scomber japonicus larvae was made in order to locate the species spawning areas in the Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California). Larvae were found in six of ten cruises. The organisms were distributed mainly in the north and central regions of the Sea of Cortez. The spawning season for mackerel was found to be from November to April in this region. The larvae were from 2.0 to 11.0 mm standard length. The shortest lengths were the most frequent. Larger individuals were caught mostly at night. The sea surface temperature when larvae were found was between 16.0 to 22.0°C. This variable was shown to be an important factor determining the ocurrence and distribution of these larvae.
