Authors: Hernández-Trujillo, S.; Esqueda-Escárcega, G. M.
Abstract: The species richness of marine copepods of Mexico is outlined based on published data and our own data from coastal and offshore areas along the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. Three questions were posed: How many copepod species have been described so far in the Pacific, Gulf of Mexico and the Mexican Caribbean Sea? Are there more species in one place than in other? What proportion of worldwide copepod species are in Mexican waters? In the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea, 193 species have been identified, and in the Pacific, 197. The number of species common to both areas is 128. The Pacific area is as diverse as the Atlantic ocean. The proportion of the species inhabiting Mexican waters is difficult to determine, but because Mexico is influenced by subarctic, subtropical, and tropical currents, as well as the increase of study areas, it is expected Mexico would be one of the countries with the greatest diversity of copepoda.2002-06-01T00:00:00ZEpiphytic diatoms of Macrocystis pyrifera (L.) Ag. from the Baja California peninsula, Mexico

Abstract: Blades of Macrocystis pyrifera and other kelp species used to feed young abalone (Haliotisspp.) in culture were observed in order to determine the species of epiphytic diatoms. For comparison rocksand sediments were also surveyed. The dominant taxon on M. pyrifera blades was Cocconeis cf. britannica.Other important species were Cocconeis speciosa, Gomphonemopsis pseudoexigua, and Climacosphenia moniligera, which was associated to a colonial Navicula sp. None of these species were observed on the other kelp species or on rocky substratum. Even though Cocconeis cf. britannica was very abundant itrepresents a new record for the Baja California Peninsula coasts. Other first records are C. speciosa, Pseudogomphonema kamtschaticum, Rhoicosphenia adolphi and Okedenia inflexa, albeit this one from sediments and rocky substratum. The absence of Cocconeis cf. britannica from other substrata and other kelp from the area suggests that it may have a preference for M. pyrifera as substrate. These observations should be considered when assessing the kelp's nutritional value for abalone feeding.

Description: A hydrodynamic barotropic model was used to simulate the circulation induced by tide and wind in the Bay of La Paz, B.C.S. The tide components M2, N2, S2, K2, 01 and K1 were considered in this model as well as winds from the Northwest and South with speeds of 4, 5 and 10 m/s. Model results showed the highest velocity values along the coast induced apparently by wind stress and topographic effects. This results were validated qualitatively and quantitatively by an analytic model and field current velocities. Some effects of the circulation are discussed in relation to possible pollution discharges.2002-06-01T00:00:00ZUnusual occurrence of Gnathanodon speciosus (Teleostei: Carangidae) in a mangrove swamp habitat of Baja California Sur, MéxicoGónzález-Acosta, A. Authors: Gónzález-Acosta, A. F.; De la Cruz-Agüero, G.; Ruíz-Campos, G.
