We present an investigation about Algebraic Thought carried out in Uruguay, with students of 3° form of middle school (14-15 years), students of 6° form of high school (16-17 years) and students of 3° form that are studying to become a Maths Teacher (alder than 21 years with varied ages), around the property, called Hankeliana in our country, and whose enunciated says: “If a and b are real numbers and a.b=0, then a=0 or b=0” The exploratory studies revealed that the high school students and those of tertiary level show certain tendency to generalize the property Hankeliana, from the real numbers to other algebraic structures where this property is not always valid. We also observe that w he students have to solve equations in R like for example (2x-6)(5x+10)=0, they don’t always apply the property, even when it is the only available tool and and have received instruction on their application to the resolution of factored polynomial equation. Also we detect an error that the students make to the moment to verify the roots of an equation like the one we mention above. The error consists on the simultaneous assignment of two different values to the unknown, like it illustrates the following outline: The objectives for the present investigation are: • To observe the strategies that the students that know the property Hankeliana of the real numbers use when they face the resolution of factored polynomial equations that involve expressions even to zero, putting attentions of the students the knowing the property and constituting this the only tool of resolution of these equations, they don’t apply it. • To examine the error that students make when they substitute to the unknown for two different values in simultaneous form, when verifying the roots in a polynomial equation that is given in factored form and even to zero and to formulate possible explanation of it. • To look for elements in order to highlight, in relation to the students that generalize the property Hankeliana from the real numbers to other algebraic structures where it is not valid, even when they have received specific instruction in this respect and to observe how the amplification of the repertoire of mathematical objects that the students interpret evolves whet they see a and b in the expression a.b=0, along the years off instruction.-
